In June, 2002, Putian College Library merged with The Library of Fujian Medical University at Putian, thus establishing the present-day Putian University (PTU) Library. Covering an area of 5,026 square meters, the main library building consists of Xu Louguang Library and Xiong Xin Library, which were built with the donation from Mr. Xu Guoxiong, a Putianese Hong Kong entrepreneur, and his son in 1989 and 1998 respectively. And the branch library in North campus, with an area of 5,912 square meters, began its construction in September, 2001 and was completed in January, 2003. The Library provides approximately 1,019 reading seats and opens 98 hours per week.

To support its mission, the Library offers a rich array of information resources. It comprises an all-rounded collection of materials in science and technology, engineering, arts, administration, clinical medicine and teaching, giving priority to fundamental, professional and academic literature resources. By September, 2012, the Library's collection includes more than 967,000 volumes of print books and over 2,174,000 volumes of electronic books. That is 210 volumes / 70 volumes of print books per student. The departments include: Collection development centre, Periodicals centre, Reader service centre, System and information centre and Administrative Office. The Library uses ILASII for cataloging and circulation management. With a strong focus on technology and network access, the Library buildings contain various facilities and equipment for digital applications, enhanced information retrieval and wireless network connectivity.

The Library also lays a special emphasis on academic learning and communication. It has two research sections, focusing on Library & Information and MAZU studies respectively. Every year, the Library organizes seminars on the study of Library & Information and the collection of materials relevant to MAZU studies. At the beginning of 2009, “A Digital Research of Literature Relevant to MAZU” was approved, 6,704 pieces of bibliographic information and 3,898 papers are include so far.

Putian University Library is undergoing transformation from a traditional library based on physical collections preservation and service, to a hybrid library, with abundant digital resources, and a rapid developing network service, and faces many challenges. In the 21st century, Putian University Library is striving to be a digitized, open and modern academic library.
